Me
Hi! long time no see!
I remember you were on a medical placement in Kenya.
How was it?
Katie
I had a great time!
I spent 3 weeks in the paediatric department.
All the kids were so cute.
I really enjoyed hanging out with them.
Me
That’s good!
You had some time to play with local kids!
How did you spend time with them?
Katie
Well… I didn’t play with them.
But, I was trying to distract them when doctors were taking bloods.
Me
What else did you do in the hospital?
Katie
I went on ward rounds, clinics, and some surgeries.
Me
What kind of surgeries did you see?
Katie
I saw a procedure in which they removed fluid from the pericardial space.
It was a really dangerous because they weren’t using any imaging to guide the needle.
Normally, we use ultrasound to guide the needle, but maybe he was confident enough to go in blindly.
Me
Really?
Does that ever happen in the UK?
Katie
I haven’t seen that many of the same procedures.
But, I don’t think so.
Me
Isn’t it unsafe?
Katie
Yes, you could die.
I was really nervous watching it.
Me
But, is this a common practice in Kenya or in this hospital?
Katie
I must say, I don’t know.
But, I wouldn’t be surprised if it was.
Me
Were there any other differences from the UK?
Katie
Yeah, so many!
There are too many to list here, but the biggest difference was the doctors in training were not being paid.
Me
Really?
Kenyan doctors receive no salary!?
Sounds very tough!
Katie
Yes. I couldn’t do it myself.
