Have you ever dreamed of becoming a samurai like the ones you see in anime and manga — and wielding a real Japanese sword?
The Japanese sword, or katana, is one of Japan’s most iconic traditional crafts.
And yes — there are places where you can actually experience using one yourself.
This is not a replica or a stage prop.
You get to use a real katana and try cutting with it.

This time, I’m introducing a dojo called “Seiryu-kan(正柳館)”.

Here’s what the exterior looks like.

Depending on the course you choose, you can also rent samurai costumes.
If you want to fully enjoy the experience, I strongly recommend dressing the part.
Even just holding the sword or practicing drawing and sheathing it is incredibly exciting.
Real swords are quite heavy, and improper handling can cause injury, so the instructors carefully teach you how to use them safely.
Cutting smoothly is harder than it looks.
You need to learn the correct technique and timing.
It’s also very different from the striking style used in kendo.
The target we cut was a bundle of straw mats.
These are said to simulate human flesh.
If bamboo is placed inside, it represents bone —
meaning that if you can cut through a bamboo-reinforced bundle, you could theoretically cut through a human body.
Unlike wooden swords, which are mainly used with a “striking” motion, a real katana requires techniques such as drawing cuts and follow-through swings.
When you’re inexperienced, you tend to strike downward, which won’t cut at all.
By the end, I was able to cut cleanly and consistently.
When you fail and end up striking instead of cutting, the shock travels straight into your hands.
But when you slice cleanly, there’s almost no sensation at all —
you might even find yourself wondering, “Wait… did I really cut it?”
They also explain not only how real sword fights might work, but even how sword fighting is portrayed in film and television.
On camera, the sword and the person being “cut” can actually be quite far apart, yet it still looks convincing.
Apparently, filmmaking techniques evolved specifically to create that illusion.
Even if you’re not particularly skilled, simply wearing samurai attire and swinging a sword is a lot of fun.

Although the katana is a symbol of Japanese tradition, even most Japanese people never get the chance to hold and use a real one.
It’s an incredibly fun and unique experience.
If you’re interested in Japanese culture, this is definitely worth trying.
